Region Information : Harum, or Farão, was originally a prehistoric fishing village. Cidade Velha (the Old City) overlooks the marina and Faro’s estuary, Ria Formosa, where it remains isolated behind its ancient walls.
The earliest building is the cathedral dating from the 13th century. The other buildings around the square include the Bishop’s Palace and seminary from the 18th century and the 19th century town hall.
Many of Faro’s points of interest are easily in walking distance. A short walk from the main gate of the Cidade Velha across the square will take you to the Rua do Santo Antonio, where you can visit many lovely shops and cafes in a pedestrian-only environment. Following the nearby Rua do Lethes leads you to a plain building that formerly served as a Jesuit school but now houses the local Red Cross and the Tetro Lethes (it is said that it is a miniature of the La Scala in Milan).
The hotel reception is very happy to assist you choose among the area’s many cafes and restaurants. The Tourism Office at 18 Avenida de Outubro has a myriad of pamphlets and booklets about other places to visit in Faro and the surrounding areas.
Important Information : Additional Costs:
Extra Bed: Between EUR 12.50 and EUR 15 depending on the season.
Hotel Information : The original building on this site was built in the 1880's by a wealthy family associated with seafaring. As the original structure was listed as a building of architectural interest, the owner mirrored the original style and features in constructing the Hotel Residencial S. Algarve.
You will note the original pineapples which have been repaired and replaced along with the hand-painted tiles (some of the originals have been preserved in the glass cabinets in the foyer).
In 2004, 2 adjacent buildings were purchased so the hotel could be extended. Whilst excavating to lay the foundations, Roman ruins were exposed. Work was halted for nearly 2 months whilst archaeologists identified the layout of the Roman building and removed pottery.
A lift facilitates access to all floors. A laundry service and secure parking in the hotel's underground garage are also available.
Helpful, friendly and efficient staff, our tranquil decor, and our peaceful ambience have earned us a good reputation, as is reflected in most guidebooks as well as in many complimentary letters from previous guests.
Food & Beverages : The self-service continental breakfast is taken in the breakfast room or inner courtyard (weather permitting) on the ground floor between 08:30 and 10:30.
An earlier breakfast can be ordered providing guests request it from the reception before 22:00 on the previous day.
