Founded back in 831 by Abd-Al-Rahman II in a privileged location, at the very center of Seguras’s river valley, Murcia reached a great relevance in Arab times. What’s left of the city’s wall proves it (a 15 meter high construction with 95 towers). The grandeur of back then can also be appreciated in the numerous archeological findings (for instance, the ones found at in the nunnery “Convento de la sClaras”)
The Christian city left also its unmistakable mark in Murcia’s urban’s appearance. The main thoroughfares (Platería and Trapería) still reflect the busy trading activity. But it was not until the 16th century (and particularly in the 17th century) that Murcia reaches its urban splendor expanding beyond the city walls. It is now when the main churches are built (mainly in Baroque style), amongst which La Merced, San Miguel, Santa Ana, Las Claras, Santo Domingo, Santa Eulalia or San Juan de Dios,
Mucia’s first temple was the Cathedral, which construction began at the end of the 14th century and which features several Gothic elements. The 92 meter high tower was built between the 16th and 18th century.
Apart from the Cathedral, there are other outstanding buildings such as Palacio Episcopal, El Almudí, the City Hall, Hotel Victoria, the Romea Theater or the Casino.
The richness of the city is also reflected in the several museums (Arqueológico, Fine Arts or Salzillo). But Murcian art goes beyond the city limits. We can find excellent examples of Barroque architecture at the Santuarui de la Fuensanta or the Monasterio de San Jerónimo.
But Murcia is not anchored to its past, it’s also a modern city with good infrastructure, an important university complex and an Auditorium and Congress Palace which, together with the hotel offer, make this city the perfect place for meetings and events.
Murcia is also a paradise for countryside lovers, with several green routes in the surroundings (Valle Carrascoy Regional Park, Vega del Segura etc).
