Region Information : Plaza Mayor (Main square) (700 meters) – The square is a particularly good example of the 18th century Baroque square. It is an almost perfect square structure, with an arcade of half point arches, above which there are three floors which have a balustrade and pinnacles decorated with lilies. Just like today, some of the most important religious, civilian and leisure activities of the city took place here: bullfights, processions and even executions. The square is a well-known meeting point throughout the city and is also a famous meeting place for romantic couples. Casa de Las Conchas (House of the Shells) (1.6 km) – This palace is perhaps the best example of the Catholic Kings’ architecture. Built in the 15th century, this urban palace blends together Gothic, Mudejar and Italian influences. It is the use of shells as an ornamental element that generates the most controversy. Some historians see it as a show of pride by the Maldonados for belonging to the order of Saint James. Catedral Nueva (New Cathedral) (400 metres) – Construction on this cathedral began in 1513 and did not conclude until 1733. Although its style is essentially Gothic - Baroque, Plateresco and Neoclassical elements can be found. In this sense, the Baroque tower stands out. Fonda Veracruz (400 meters) - The external structure is similar to a patio or street without an exit and in the past, the old Jewish ghetto was located here. Today it is the headquarters of the School of Hostelry.
