Region Information : Two hours may be enough to walk over and around city, but you would need far more to describe it. With 350,000 citizens, Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia. However in terms of some global criteria, it is considered to be a smaller town. Not too big, not too small 'just enough', we like to say. It has never been the capital city of any state, but for long time under Austrian Empire and Austrio-Hungarian Monarchy Novi Sad has been the epicenter of Serbian culture. The city with the first national theater, for some time, has been the cultural center of the region. Buildings dating back to late 18th century and early 19th make up the very center of the city, which gives it a touch of middle- European charm, so characteristic for all cities that lay on banks of the Danube River. In the past located at the south of Ugrian Monarchy, today it is the capital city of the northern Serbian province Vojvodina, granary of the Balkans and the most multicultural region in Europe. People of various nations and religions have been living in this corner of the world in harmony, for centuries now, which makes it so easy to fit in here. It is said that Novi Sad is the furthest city in the east in Western Europe and the furthest city in the west in Eastern Europe. People from all over the world find Novi Sad a place where everything goes slower, more relaxed and smoother. It is an easy going place. One of the most beautiful beaches on Danube 'Strand', is where else but in Novi Sad. 'Strand' is the place where citizens of Novi Sad come not just to swim, sunbathe and spend summer days but also 'to see and to be seen'. On the opposite side of the river is Fruska Gora, mountain as tame as the city itself and in its bottom opposite to the city is Petrovaradin Fortress. Petrovaradin, 'City on a rock, firm as faith’. In Latin ‘Petra’ means ‘rock’ and ‘var’ is ‘city’ in Hungarian, while ‘din’ is from Turkish and it means ‘faith’. Gathering these words, we get ‘Petrovaradin’, which is in literally interpretation of our people ‘City on a rock, firm as faith’. Petrovaradin Fortress - historical, architectural, artistic and tourist jewel has proven to be an ideal place for the Exit festival. ‘The Gibraltar of Danube’ as it was called. Today fortress is a favorite tourist attraction and stage of the biggest festival in Southeastern Europe. Apart from magic atmosphere, that puts spell on all the visitors and performers of the festival it offers remarkable acoustic possibilities – multiple events taking place at the same time without interference. Art Academy, Novi Sad City Museum, Historical Archive, Equestrian Club and Archer Club all have their place at the fortress. Beneath it, is a famous complex of catacombs with sight seeing tours with professional Guide Service. Inner buildings are full of art studios where you can experience process of art in rise.
